My dad passed away from cancer on March 7th, 2010 and everything changed. He was sick for quite awhile so you know it is coming but nothing prepares you as you watch it happen.
Running was the only thing that cleared my head, as it always did. I could run forever.
I had always been a part of giving back to Breast Cancer Research and Awareness after watching so many women go through the battle. There are so many great races and organizations that support the cause but there aren’t that many for men. Prostate cancer is a topic that is isn’t discussed enough, and I had an idea. What if we do a Father’s Day 5k benefiting the American Cancer Society and promoting mens health and wellness?
In June that same year we held our first Stache Dash 5k race with about 80 runners and a successful raffle, and were able to make a large donation to the ACS. We were making a difference.
Since 2010, our organization continues to grow. Over the years, we experimented with different types of fund raisers, including a big air contest held at Bristol Mountain.
In 2017, with the help of our added board members, we were able to double our donations and we changed our name from “Stache Dash Charity” to the “Blue Foundation” we are today. We continue to add events to our calendar and constantly striving to make an impact in our community.
Despite our growth, we stay true to our roots. Our focus continues to be on men’s health and wellness, and we make our donations locally to help those closest to us. We keep our events fun and informal, with a emphasis on community and family because in the end, those are our most valuable resources.
